Help Map Hudson Valley Biodiversity — Join the DNA Project

Mycota Labs is a laboratory that specializes in DNA barcoding—a process that identifies a species with certainty by reading its genetic sequence, rather than relying on visual identification alone. Their MycoMaps initiative uses this data to build detailed, science-grade maps of fungal biodiversity across a region. Through our partnership with Mycota Labs, MHMA can now send specimens out for DNA sequencing, and that data feeds directly into the MycoMaps project, turning what we find on our walks into verified, research-grade contributions to the broader scientific record.

This partnership also puts MHMA in a strong position for what's ahead. A number of institutions—including Black Rock Forest, Dutchess County, Ulster County, and Vassar College—have expressed interest in working with MHMA to document the biodiversity on their land. Those partnerships aren't finalized yet, but we want to be ready when they are. That means putting real thought into our field protocols now, with a small group of members who are willing to help build this from the start.

We're looking for committed individuals to join a small group of club members who will focus on this initiative and have a direct hand in creating our field work process. This group will have the opportunity to explore land seldom seen by the public, and to work closely with the scientific staff of these organizations. Participants in this project will have access to a dedicated discussion board to share ideas and experiences.  

Participants in this group will:

• Voucher and collect select species during designated walks

• Upload observations to the institution's iNaturalist Project

• Help establish the field protocols MHMA will use going forward
