The many mushrooms found on the Black Rock walk gave John Cox an opportunity to explain why it is so important to cut open what you think is a puffball before you ever think of eating it.
We had a hell of a day in the rain at Black Rock and the forests were absolutely exploding with mushrooms! We found the nicest golden chanterelles I ever discovered, and we took many specimens for our DNA Project. We also found a clutch of black trumpets to add to the basket. It was a fantastic walk in Orange County!
We had a fantastic walk at Gerry and Carol's place on Saturday. We found a bounty of mushrooms, several of which were vouchered and selected for DNA sampling through our biodiversity work with MycoMaps. And after the walk we had a wonderful potluck spread featuring things like rabbit potpie, smoked chicken, rice, and zucchini salads, cheese platters, homemade raspberry wine, burgers and hotdogs with wild mushroom relishes, homemade baklava, and so much more! Much thanks to the McDonald's for letting us enjoy the day at their beautiful home and property, and to all the members who brought food to share.
