Our Mission...

"To promote the enjoyment, study and exchange of information about hunting, identifying & culturing fungus and the safe selection of edible wild mushrooms. Anyone who has an interest in wild mushrooms is welcome to join the club and have fun with fungi, family and friends."

They're surprising, confounding & persnickety. They're luscious, dangerous, elegant, comical, freakish, beautiful, hideous, aromatic, stinky, interesting, slimy, disconcerting, delicious, fleeting, earthy and sublime. What are they? Why fungi, of course. The list could go on nearly forever, and that is part of the fun!

Have you ever found yourself wondering about those strange lumps growing in your yard? Do you ever wish you knew more about wild edibles? Perhaps you're a seasoned mycophile who wants to meet other like minded folk? The MHMA is full of people just like you.

Our members come from a diverse blend of interests & backgrounds. We're biologists, chefs, mycologists, artists, programmers, blacksmiths, photographers. (And everything in between!) Among us, our knowledge of fungi ranges from true beginner to expert. We gather to share our interest for the amazingly large & detailed kingdom of fungi. If you're interested in mushroom culturing, foraging, photography or identification, welcome! A Quick History.... The Mid Hudson Mycological Association was founded by DCC Behavioral Sciences professor, Bill Bakaitis in 1983 in response to a growing need for education on the subject of edible and toxic mushrooms. The "club" has remained active in educating the surrounding communities ever since, maintaining relationships with other organizations such as the Mohonk Preserve, Minnewaska State Park, The Morse Estate, The CIA and numerous regional groups...
