Ferncliff Forest Update and Directions

We did a looksee on Sunday and the mushrooms are starting to come alive due to the increased rain we've had. Lots of russulas, slime molds, LBMs, a waxy cap or two, chickens of the woods, oysters and we didn't cover nearly all there is to offer.

Directions

For directions from your house,I checked a bunch of map programs and they should all have the address of Ferncliff Forest. Otherwise, follow be…low. These directions are from either the Kingston bridge or Northern Dutchess Hospital
Directions from Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge:
1. Start out going EAST on NY-199/KINGSTON-RHINECLIFF BRIDGE toward RIVER RD/CR-103. Continue to follow NY-199. 1.4 mi
2. Turn RIGHT onto RIVER RD/CR-103. 0.7 mi
3. Turn SLIGHT LEFT onto MT RUTSEN RD. 1.1 mi
Arrive at 66 MOUNT RUTSEN RD.

Directions fromRte 9 North just south of Northern Dutchess Hospital. If you pass the Hospital going north, you've gone a block too far. (Montgomery St is just South of the Hospital)
1. Start out going NORTH on US-9/SPRING BROOK AVE toward MONTGOMERY ST.
2. Turn LEFT onto MONTGOMERY ST. 0.5 mi
3. MONTGOMERY ST becomes OLD POST RD. 0.1 mi Map | Avoid
4. Turn SLIGHT LEFT onto MT RUTSEN RD. 0.6 mi Map | Avoid
Arrive at 66 MOUNT RUTSEN RD.

Colgate Lake This Sunday!!!!! August 15th

We apologize for the quick changes and scheduling this year. The whacky weather has caught us off guard.

The Colgate Lake Walk in Greene County which was scheduled in July has been rescheduled for this Sunday, August 15th.

MHMA Walk & Swim! - Colgate Lake in Greene County

10 am – 1 pm
Meet in the parking lot – Please aim to get there between 9:30 and 10am to get organized.

Things to bring:
Mushroom basket and knife
Field guide
Water / food
Good walking shoes / sun hat
Bug spray
Bathing suit / towel if you’d like to swim

Colgate Lake is located past Tannersville near E. Jewett in Greene County. We expect chanterelles. In fact, we think that the location is worth more than one walk the following week if conditions are good. We have found B. edulis, Lactarius hygrophoroides and chanterelles there in the past.

The website above has a pretty picture of the lake itself. What it doesn’t show is the scenic view of the mountains across the lake (Thomas Cole and Blackhead Mountains). This is a great swimming/family location. Bring the kids! If they tire of mycology, there’s always swimming.

Ashokan Walk Update

We did a looksee this evening to see what was out there. It's dry as a bone at the Asokan Reservoir. All we found were 4 dry chanterelles. However, we have an alternate site that has fruiting mushrooms.

We're still meeting at the Ashokan reservoir at 8:30 am. At 9 am we'll be heading to another location close by. So please try and get to the parking lot no later than 8:45 so we can take "inventory" and we won't leave anyone behind.

Where are the Mushrooms This Year?

Paul Nelson has a good question, "This is the least fruiting season I've ever seen in 20 years. Could the drought and high temperatures have destroyed the mycelium? And if so what is the impact on future seasons? Any ideas?"

My theory is that it may have damaged the mycelium and some better weather will bring about a late fruiting season.

I revisited the Hurley Rail Trail Sunday and did see some sings that mushrooms are starting to come back. The cinnabar chanterelles that we found last week didn't make it. The field of small buds had dried up without developing further. But not far from there we found some young chicken of the woods and white oysters. There are also a lot of boletes.

More experienced Mushroomers: Please help answer this question.

Oyster Straw Basket Update

Well, covering the basket to keep it dark definitely boosted the fruiting timetable into hyper mode. All 4 sides have started budding little trumpet shapes. They almost look like coral from the ocean. Here are some photos.

Oyster Baskets Update

Our basket has been stored in the basement/garage near the frosted windows. During the day it gets indirect dusk-like light. Comparing the results to Elmer's basket, which is kept covered in a dark area and has started to fruit, we decided to cover our basket with an old blanket. The outer edges are now starting to fill out with mycelium. Updated photos coming this week.

Hurley Rail Trail Mushroom Walk Results

Thanks to everyone who made it to the Hurley Rail Trail today. We found Russelas, Boletes, lots of LBM's, a possible Angel's Wing, Scrambled Egg Slime, many unidentified 'shrooms and a small patch of Cinnabar Chanterelles that may be ready later in the week.

Here are the directions. With the glorious rain we've received over the last 10 days we should start seeing some mushrooms.

HURLEY RAIL TRAIL Directions:

From the north and south: from the NYS Thruway exit 19 (Kingston) follow the
signs from the toll booth for "Route 209 South Ellenville". Once you are on
Route 209, set your tripometer 0.0…You will notice, once you pass over the
Esopus, that there is a paved bike path running parallel to Route 209 on the
left side of the road. At 2.2 miles you will go under the Hurley overpass.
Proceed another 1.1 miles (for a total of 3.3). The parking area for the
trailhead is where the paved bike path dives into the trees, almost hidden
in the woods to the left. If you begin to go downhill, you've gone just too
far…
