Yes, joining the MHMA means you'll have the opportunity to go on walks with more experienced, knowledgeable mushroomers. Sharing what we know is what we do. :)

Hi all,
Over the last year I have been studying mushrooms. I have I learned all the basics of identification, however many are difficult to positively identify. Does joining MHMA mean that on walks, more experienced members help newer members learn to identify mushrooms or do you need to be a mushroom expert to join? If so, is there another way to become an expert?

Even if there was an available map showing what could be found where it would be highly inaccurate as mushrooms don't always fruit in the same place every year. Not to mention avid 'shroomers aren't necessarily willing to let on what their good spots are. If you are curious what kinds of mushrooms can be found in the Northeast I would suggest you pick up a copy of the Audubon Guide to Mushrooms. You can find it here...
http://www.midhudsonmyco.org/mushroom-info-center/books/

We are new members as of 8/26/11. Will there be someone to guide us so far as which mushrooms are edible and which are not, and other information. We have never been involved in hunting mushrooms but we sure do love them.

I'm not sure about classes, but we're always looking for new spots for group walks. If you're interrested in scheduling a last minute walk, let us know. (In my experience, someone will show up who will get you started learning how to ID mushrooms)

I live in Pine Plains, NY with tons of mushrooms in my forest. Can you recommend good classes to take in order to learn about mushrooms?
Thanks for any info.
