Yes, joining the MHMA means you'll have the opportunity to go on walks with more experienced, knowledgeable mushroomers. Sharing what we know is what we do. :)

Hi all,
Over the last year I have been studying mushrooms. I have I learned all the basics of identification, however many are difficult to positively identify. Does joining MHMA mean that on walks, more experienced members help newer members learn to identify mushrooms or do you need to be a mushroom expert to join? If so, is there another way to become an expert?

Even if there was an available map showing what could be found where it would be highly inaccurate as mushrooms don't always fruit in the same place every year. Not to mention avid 'shroomers aren't necessarily willing to let on what their good spots are. If you are curious what kinds of mushrooms can be found in the Northeast I would suggest you pick up a copy of the Audubon Guide to Mushrooms. You can find it here...
http://www.midhudsonmyco.org/mushroom-info-center/books/

Please, where can I find a current mushroom map telling me what's up where.
David Work dubbed me "The Porcini Queen" and I mean to live up to that title again this year!
Good hunting to one and all,
P.Q.

To answer the question about "dying off en masse" I'd say a combination of temperature and rain. The mycelium is underground and still alive of course, it's just the spore distributing mushrooms that have withered away.

Not sure if you got a reply, but the best way to do this (identify mushrooms that you're curious about) is to join the Facebook group and post your pictures there. There's lively discussion and many experts there. The group name is "MidHudsonMyco.org - Fungus Mushroom Mycology Club Hudson Valley New York" They'll tell you if you need a spore print or need to take out a microscope, or if your pictures are good enough for a positive ID.

Any idea why clusters of black trumpet chanterelles die off en masse no matter what the size of each individual specimen?
