Hi…I used to live in Dutchess County and now live in Sullivan County. I am looking for a group to get involved with as I am beginning to take an interest in Mushroom growing and cultivation, maybe marketing etc.. Anything mushrooms! I own 26 acres of wonderful Oak forest and have no idea how to tap the bounty or possibilities contained there. All I know is…there are big mushrooms everywhere…lol. Do you know of a group here or perhaps yourselves that I might get involved with. Thank you….Martin L. Stinson
Hello , I am becoming more interested in wild and cultivated mushrooms. Are there any mushroom identification classes near Albany ?
If not , If I went on walks with your society would I be able to learn mushroom identification ?
My main concern is mistaking a poisionious mushroom for a good one , and I would like to know someone who could give me some one-on-one advice when I am learning.
Thanks,
Dave Witbeck
Hello i was reading about the way you said to grow the oysters. I have recently ordered blue oyster plugs. They said to place them in oak logs. Will this work or should i buy the syringe style.
PS I would like to start a business in this field but do not know much. So can you tell me about membership and if I join do you folks have news letters and so forth for teaching

hello – I have a mega load of what I think are black trumpets and chantarelles ready for harvest (along with about 60 other species) in my woods. How may I get help positively identofying these as edible? Thansk!!
Any idea why clusters of black trumpet chanterelles die off en masse no matter what the size of each individual specimen?
Not sure if you got a reply, but the best way to do this (identify mushrooms that you’re curious about) is to join the Facebook group and post your pictures there. There’s lively discussion and many experts there. The group name is “MidHudsonMyco.org – Fungus Mushroom Mycology Club Hudson Valley New York” They’ll tell you if you need a spore print or need to take out a microscope, or if your pictures are good enough for a positive ID.
To answer the question about “dying off en masse” I’d say a combination of temperature and rain. The mycelium is underground and still alive of course, it’s just the spore distributing mushrooms that have withered away.
Are you having mushroom walks soon??
Rodrigo
Our next scheduled walk is at Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie on Saturday September 24.
Please, where can I find a current mushroom map telling me what's up where.
David Work dubbed me "The Porcini Queen" and I mean to live up to that title again this year!
Good hunting to one and all,
P.Q.
Even if there was an available map showing what could be found where it would be highly inaccurate as mushrooms don't always fruit in the same place every year. Not to mention avid 'shroomers aren't necessarily willing to let on what their good spots are. If you are curious what kinds of mushrooms can be found in the Northeast I would suggest you pick up a copy of the Audubon Guide to Mushrooms. You can find it here…

Hi all,
Over the last year I have been studying mushrooms. I have I learned all the basics of identification, however many are difficult to positively identify. Does joining MHMA mean that on walks, more experienced members help newer members learn to identify mushrooms or do you need to be a mushroom expert to join? If so, is there another way to become an expert?
Yes, joining the MHMA means you’ll have the opportunity to go on walks with more experienced, knowledgeable mushroomers. Sharing what we know is what we do.
Great site! Moving to Rhinebeck, NY for most of the upcoming year and I'm interested in finding chaga and reishi mushrooms. Do either grow in upstate NY? Thank you and I look forward to the walks!
Hi,
I'm currently a member of the Boston Mycology Club and am thinking of joining your club as well. I'm very interested in finding workshops in how to cultivate a variety of mushrooms and am wondering if you will be offering any such programs in 2013?
Thank you.

Hi Georganna,
We don’t have anything scheduled right now, but if enough people show an interrest, you never know.
Have you selected a weekend in October 2013 for the annual foray in Breitenbush?
Hi Janet.
The annual foray in Breitenbush is actually scheduled by the people in Breitenbush. When we find the information on this foray, we will post it. T
Thanks for reminding us to look into it!
Hi Maureen,
I just noticed this post. Sorry for the delay in answering you. Both chaga and reishi grow in upstate NY, and we find them on a few of our walks every year. Hope you’re still in the area and you have a chance to join us. The walks schedule will be up soon.
Hello!
My wife and I forage with our kids in the Mendocino area of California whenever we get to viit there, and they've suggested we start exploring our own Hudson Valley region (we live in New WIndsor). Is there anything coming up that we could join in with? We'd support a local ID course if there is one, and we're also certainly willing to join up if there are structured goings-on to participate in!
Thanks!
